Can force sensors be used for predictive maintenance?

Can force sensors be used for predictive maintenance?

Big data and anomalies

The data of all installed sensors within one application, are being monitored continuously and stored as big data. Based on historical data, events, technical specifications and other factors depending on the application and the industry, models can be created. When using these models for your specific application you can get anomalies based on temperature, pressure, vibrations and also forces.

How force sensors can monitor anomalies

Sensors, in our case loadcells, force sensors and strain gauges, will give data and you can monitor anomalies based on force (stress) and weight/load. With predictive maintenance you would like to do the maintenance according to the just in time principle. You don’t want to be too late, because this will result in downtime, bonus malus and huge costs consequences. But you also don’t want to be too early – this will create unnecessary losses and costs resulted by inefficient planning. When you do the maintenance just in time you will optimize your maintenance department in various ways.

Large companies in the process, agricultural and offshore industry are developing their predictive maintenance strategies. They all start by receiving data to create a good source. Storing this data and evaluate what data is important to steer on anomalies is the second step in the process of successfully implementing a strategy like this. The power of the customer is changing. We see a movement that consumers expect more service and less down-time. In fact, they strive to get a guarantee uptime of 100%, realistic or not, that is what they would like to have.

Guarantee uptime of 100%

A guarantee uptime of 100% is becoming the first place of decision making processes, above the total purchase price of applications. In order to reach this point, manufacturers of applications are now collecting data for machine learning. They want to further understand the behavior of their applications in the field. The development of predictive maintenance is going fast and understandings are developing rapidly.

Loadcells and force sensors can give indications on basis of :

  • o stress and strain levels
  • o a gradual or sudden change in weight
  • o a gradual or sudden change of forces

Based on this information and conclusions manufacturers might want to send an servicing engineer to the location in order to prevent downtime. This is called the health monitoring of applications.
