What is creep and how to deal with it?

We regularly receive questions from our customers about creep. That is why we are happy to provide some extra information on this subject.

First, an explanation of what creep actually is. Creep is the change in load cell output occurring with time while under constant load and with all environmental conditions and other variables also remaining constant. Creep occurs because each material needs some time for its molecules to settle. Each material has a certain resistance against deformation. When this limit is reached a material starts deforming. When deformation occurs the crystalline structure changes shape and increases the resistance against deformation until the deformation eventually stops. When this point is reached, the crystalline structure still has to settle into its final setting. When a higher amount of force is exerted on a load cell, more creep will occur.

To compensate this creep, strain gauges can be selected with the same amount of creep but in the opposite direction. This way the resulting signal can be minimized and kept close to 0. The creep value is dependent on many variables. Therefore, the amount of creep can only be determined empirically.

It is advised to use two strain gauges when first testing for creep. These two strain gauges should have two different creep codes. When testing the creep, these strain gauges give an indication which creep code is the right one for the application. This has to be done with each new batch of material.
